Review:
Brooklyn-based EndAnd have been around since 2011, ‘Mechanics and Energetics of Stilt-Running’ is their second release.
“Punk” is a broad label to put on a band. Within the genre, there are two side of the fence, varying from loud-and-fast hardcore to more pop-friendly, (think Ramones-inspired) tunes. EndAnd is somewhere in between all of this, in a good way, a unique way. With ‘Mechanics and Energetics of Stilt-Running’, EndAnd combine guitar, melody, and anger through the first set of songs. The tracks are concise and bring back a nineties “we are all fucked” grungy feel. The second half of the album is rawer, less arrangement, and has a more garage-punk sound to them.
The production is scratchy at times, encouraging the listener to place their mind inside a small graffiti-lined room where the band is playing live (at least that is my assumption). Personally, the “real deal” sound works, its clear this band takes their music seriously. A lot of the lyrics wrestle with politics and disease, bubbling with rage that escalates and ends sometimes within one minute.
EndAnd have put together a progressive-punk album that is worth a listen to fans of the genre, regardless of which side of the punk fence you prefer…
